When choosing a dentist to treat your sleep apnea, Dr. Clay Hansen, a dentist in Moscow, Idaho, recommends asking certain questions to be sure you're choosing the right dentist.
Dr. Hansen says to be sure to ask how long they've been treating sleep apnea. Having treated sleep apnea since 2006, it wasn't until a couple of years ago where Dr. Hansen realized he wanted to increase his 50% success rate. He then joined three different sleep medicine academies and has done an enormous amount of continuing education on sleep apnea, with the intent of trying to find a better way to treat this disease. Since starting his current protocol, in the forty people he's treated this year thus far, he's only had one failure.
The next question Dr. Hansen recommends asking a potential dentist is how they know they're successful. Before starting his new protocol, the only way Dr. Hansen thought he was successful is if a patient told him they were feeling better and weren't snoring anymore. He now wants to know for sure if his patients have been treated successfully and to that end, he has his patients use a home sleep test to check his results. Once that report shows success, Dr. Hansen sends that off to the physician to draw the final conclusion.
Dr. Hansen says it's important to ask about the dentist's training and credentials in sleep apnea. Being a member of three different academies, including the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which is for physicians, as well as the Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. He currently has his academic certification in the Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines and is working on becoming a diplomat in that academy as well.
