Sleep apnea is when you have a disruption in sleep where the air is not getting into your lungs and it can cause some pretty serious side effects, says Dr. David Little, a dentist in San Antonio, Texas.
One of the first things that patients of Dr. Little will say is that their spouse says they snore. Dr. Little will do a very good exam and he says the biggest problem is the blockage of air and airway. Sleep studies can be done to really delve into what the problem is and then come up with a solution to take care of it.
Snoring doesn't necessarily mean one has sleep apnea and that's why a sleep study is performed to determine if enough air is getting in what the severity is, says Dr. Little. That information is classified as mild, moderate or severe and the proper diagnosis will give the patient the best treatment plan to take care of the problem, he says.
