"Your All-Inclusive Package to Practice Dental Sleep Medicine" Dentist Dr. David Rawson, London and Toronto, Ontario
The Canadian Academy of Clinical Sleep Disorders Disciplines is a relatively new organization that already has 65 members. Dr. David Rawson discusses the need for the Academy and its upcoming first annual conference in this report.
As Dr. Rawson explains, most members of the Canadian dental profession working in the sleep medicine practice received their training in the U.S. or by medical educators who have come to Canada. However, “the delivery of the medical-dental system in Canada is vastly different than it is in the states.” That big difference is the reason there needs to be a “made-in-Canada” organization for dentists who practice sleep medicine.
The Canadian Academy is a multi-discipline and totally collaborative solution for patients who need this type of care. The Academy is primarily a dental organization for practitioners who provided an alternative to CPAP in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The organization’s target group is dentists and denturists, who are licensed to work directly with patients. However, as Dr. Rawson points out, there is a need for the medical profession to understand what sleep dentists can do. Others who might have an interest are dental laboratories, technology companies, and sleep technicians. The Academy’s aim is to make it “as multi-disciplinary as possible.”
The Academy’s first annual conference is called, “Your All-Inclusive Package to Practice Dental Sleep Medicine." The conference will be held May 22-23, 2015 at the Four Points by Sheraton Toronto Airport hotel. The conference agenda covers a wide range of topics and will offer attendees a wealth of information. The advisory team includes, in addition to Dr. Rawson, two medical advisors, three dental advisors, two industry advisors, and a business development expert.
The event hotel is close to the Pierson International Airport, making it easily accessible. Registration includes all breaks and meals Friday night and all day Saturday. The fee for doctors is $395. There is a reduced fee for staff members. More information, including registration fees, can be found on the website for the event.
Dr. Rawson suggests that this conference will offer an excellent opportunity for people already practicing sleep dentistry and for those who are considering it to learn more about the subject. Sleep dentists work with physicians in the treatment of patients who have sleep disorders, and the work needs to be done properly. “This is a very serious health issue.” Anyone who is working in sleep dentistry or thinking about it can profit from attending this conference.
