Some patients who have sleep apnea and have been treating the problem with a CPAP machine abandon the treatment because they cannot tolerate the machine. If that’s your situation, Dr. Jacques Doueck has a warning for you in this report.
Some people who have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and have been told to use a CPAP machine or an oral appliance stop doing so for some reason. In the case of a CPAP machine, the usual reason is that the patient can’t tolerate it. The problem is, says Dr. Doueck, that you are putting yourself at some risk by abandoning treatment.
First of all, says Dr. Doueck, sleep apnea is the number one cause of nighttime stroke, and that is very serious. Sleep apnea is also associated with uncontrolled high blood pressure. Someone who is taking blood pressure medication but suffers from untreated sleep apnea may find that the medication is unable to do what it is supposed to do.
Proper treatment of sleep apnea can make important differences in someone’s life. And today, there are alternatives to CPAP. One very good one is a custom-made oral appliance from a dentist. These appliances are comfortable and easy to adjust. An oral appliance might be just the solution to get someone out of sleep apnea jeopardy.
