Prosthodontics is a specialty within the field of dentistry with which many people are not familiar. Dr. Kevin B. Cebrynski is a dentist who practices in this somewhat unusual field. Dr. Cebrynski explains his specialty field in this report.
Prosthodontics deals with the replacement and restoration of teeth. Dr. Cebrynski points out that the field has a broad scope, from something as simple as a filling to “a full reconstruction of the oral environment.” The reconstruction could involve implants, removable appliances, or full crown bridges. The goal is to recreate a patient’s original dental function.
The teeth may be worn down by years of bruxism (grinding the teeth). In these situations, the prosthodontist is trying to recreate the bite the patient originally had before the years of wearing down. Dr. Cebrynski says that the work can be very difficult, but there is great reward in getting a good outcome for a patient and seeing the happy smile again.
Patients usually find out that it is time to see a prosthodontist “when it has really gone too far.” At that point, a major amount of work will be required. A lot of patients come to see a prosthodontist after a referral from a general dentist who realizes that the patient’s situation is beyond what the general dentist can do. Unfortunately, Dr. Cebrynski says, most of his cases are major ones.
By way of illustrating his daily practice, Dr. Cebrynski explains that a frequent problem will be the replacement of missing teeth with dental implants that take the place of the missing teeth. Also, crown or bridge work will often be required to work with the implants to give them a stable bite and restore their function. Implants perform a number of functions, and Dr. Cebrynski says he uses them as an everyday routine.
