Proper Brushing and Flossing Techniques, With Kaeli Kesterson, Mid Wilshire Dentistry, Los Angeles, California
Waterpicks are excellent homecare devices, as anything that will remove the bacteria, in addition to brushing and flossing, especially for patients with bridges or braces, is a good idea, says Kaeli Kesterson, a dental hygienist with Mid Wilshire Dentistry in Los Angeles, California.
So many patients want to use a hard bristle toothbrush because they feel it does a better job on cleaning but to the contrary, it's very dangerous to the gums. Hard bristles just brush away the gums, so you always want to use a soft bristle brush, says Kesterson, to take the best care of them.
Ideally, Kesterson says brushing after each meal would be wonderful but especially morning and night. When you floss, you want to get each side of the tooth and make a c-shape around each side of the tooth to clean in between the teeth.
