Gum Disease Can Contribute to Bad Breath, With Kaeli Kesterson, Dental Hygienist, Mid Wilshire Dentistry, Los Angeles, California
Once a person has been diagnosed with periodontal disease, their gums can be made healthy again. It depends on how good they are with their homecare and if diligent, patients can come back within a few months with healthy gums after they've come in for a good cleaning, says Kaeli Kesterson, a dental hygienist with Mid Wilshire Dentistry in Los Angeles, California.
Kesterson says that periodontal disease forms a lot of bacteria that forms under the gum line and once it's under there, it needs to be treated professionally and it causes bad breath.
As a dental hygienist, Kesterson, in addition to cleaning teeth, always does a thorough exam, oral cancer screening and looks for any other abnormalities in the mouth. "We're the first line of defense for finding anything wrong going on in the mouth," she says.
