Face lift dentures is a technique to fit not just the gums but the face and involves getting the muscles relaxed so the patients get a more comfortable bite, says Dr. Mark Levy, dentist in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Levy says that it also involves restoring the natural dimensions of the face.
When people get dentures, the bone under the dentures slowly wears away, so the face looks more compressed, shorter and fatter, says Dr. Levy, adding that people ultimately have dentures that don't work well and have difficulty chewing.
Face lift dentures uses a technique called neuromuscular dentistry where a dentist takes into account the way the nerves and muscles work and put patients back to where they were or in a better position, Dr. Levy says.
The name comes from the fact that people feel like they've had a face lift, as they are wearing more natural-looking dentures. These dentures aren't anchored but instead, take advantage of the muscles in the face and tongue to get the bite into the right position. Dr. Levy says that the next step would be implants, if a patient wanted, with either two large or four mini implants.
A face lift denture matches a patient's smile line and Dr. Levy makes the denture look more natural and even slightly off, to look like real teeth.
