Self-Ligation Brackets in Application of Braces, With Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, E & S Orthodontics, Phoenix, Tolleson, Chandler, Peoria, Arizona
The main reasons people get braces are for functional and aesthetic concerns. Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, an orthodontist in Phoenix, Arizona with E & S Orthodontics, tries to create the opportunity for his patients to have great self-esteem and confidence and allow their personalities come through their smiles, as he feels there is a great deal of importance put on a smile in our society.
Dr. El-Hillal uses the Damon bracket system for his patients choosing braces. Different than traditional braces, Dr. El-Hillal started using it eight years ago, which has allowed him to move away from extracting teeth and then using expanders or head gear. The advent of this into his practice has really changed how he treats his patients.
Traditional braces use a bracket, wire and elastics that hold in the wire. The self-ligation brackets, like the Damon System, has a door on the bracket that holds the wire, which allows Dr. El-Hillal to do the things he needs to do with the system because it creates a "frictional environment," to work in. In other words, it allows him to use biological sensible forces, producing tooth movement and not applying too much force in the tooth movement.
Within the self-ligation brackets, there are the passive and active brackets. The Damon System is a passive door that acts like a "guillotine," going straight up and down, where as the active door is more like a "garage door," that goes up and then starts to curve. "That little curve makes a big difference in the treatment outcome," Dr. El-Hillal says. This is one of the main reasons why Dr. El-Hillal uses the Damon System over active self-ligation brackets.
The difference is in the outcome of treatment in making sure the use of the wire in that system is fully-expressed and Dr. El-Hillal knows when the door is open or closed and when closed, he knows it's working as efficiently as possible. "When we do a certain movement, we're going to get that movement to occur quicker," he says.
