Treating Children For Orthodontics, With Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, E & S Orthodontics, Phoenix, Tolleson, Chandler, Peoria, Arizona

Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, orthodontist with E & S Orthodontics in Phoenix, Arizona, recommends children to have an orthodontic screening at age 7, as braces are being provided to children at an earlier age due to the technological advances and to also create better outcomes.

At age 6, the adult first molars come in and up until then, a dentist may recognize if the upper jaw is more narrow than the bottom.  Until then, however, they don't know how much to expand that jaw.  Dr. El-Hillal uses both traditional expanders and cases where expanders are not used.

As an orthodontist, Dr. El-Hillal is trained to pick up certain things early and make those recommendations to parents.  He sees a wide range of dental knowledge based on the dentist's education and a lot of their orthodontic experience relates back to their education.

When the front four teeth come in, Dr. El-Hillal says they should be at the "50 yard line."  In an overbite, you want to take the lower teeth at the 30 yard line to the 50 yard line to meet the top teeth and create a very aesthetic outcome.  At age 7, orthodontists are in a position to make certain predictions about growth that will really provide a lifetime of good results, he says.

Adult Orthodontics, With Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, E & S Orthodontics, Phoenix, Chandler, Tolleson, Peoria, Arizona

Adult orthodontics has really turned into a world of its own, says Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, orthodontist with E & S Orthodontics in Phoenix, Arizona.  Adults are looking to beautify their smile thru orthodontics, he adds.

Dr. El-Hillal says that a smile is "the gateway to everything" and he likes to create a smile that is unnoticeable.  With aesthetic alternatives to metal braces, adults now have a couple of options to achieve the smile they're looking for.  Invisalign is aligner therapy and clear braces have improved a lot over the years.

Adults are more compliant, says Dr. El-Hillal because they have a vested interest in the outcome, as opposed to children.  Because of that, adults are more engaged, providing a fun and energetic environment for both the patient and doctor.

Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, Orthodontist with E & S Orthodontics in Phoenix, Chandler, Peoria and Tolleson, Arizona

Dr. Ousama El-Hillal's philosophy as an orthodontist is face-driven orthodontics.  Having seen a pendulum swing in the past decade back to non-extraction therapy, patients are not only looking for function but aesthetics, as well.

Dr. El-Hillal, with practice locations in Chandler, Peoria and most recently Tolleson, believes that when taking in facial aesthetics and clinical outcome, it's best served with an orthodontist.  E & S Orthodontics was opened in 2005 with Dr. Will Saavedra, with whom he trained at Temple University.  Offering two different perspectives, Dr. El-Hillal is more right brain and Dr. Saavedra is more left brain and Dr. El-Hillal believes this offers patients a complimentary approach.  At E & S Orthodontics, patients get "two doctors for the price of one," he says.

E & S Orthodontics, With Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, Phoenix, Tolleson, Chandler, Peoria, Arizona

Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, orthodontist with E & S Orthodontics, says that one of the greatest strengths of his practice is his staff.  With over 17 years of combined experiences, they have a strong commitment to the field of orthodontics.

Dr. El-Hillal believes that when you have a staff that is committed to their patients, their actions speak to that.  As orthodontic patients come into the office at a higher frequency than dental patients, these patients can be seen about 20 times during the course of a typical 2-year treatment.  By being patient and customer-focused, Dr. El-Hillal and his staff create an experience for each patient so their treatment is positive over the course of those two years.

Dr. El-Hillal also has the pleasure of working with his best friend, Dr. Will Saavedra.  Their relationship goes back to dental school and has spanned 17 years.

Orthodontic Treatment, with Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, E & S Orthodontics in Phoenix, Tolleson, Peoria, Chandler, Arizona

There are two different patient populations when it comes to orthodontic treatment, says Dr. Ousama El-Hillal, orthodontist with E & S Orthodontics in Phoenix, Arizona.  There are those who come in for functional concerns and the other others who come in for aesthetic concerns.  What Dr. El-Hillal has done at his practice is to get the best of both worlds for his patients, by continuing his education beyond his dental and orthodontic training in order to find the best practices out there related to occlusion.

Dr. El-Hillal says that the number one concern with the aging adult population is that they want to keep their teeth and orthodontic treatment is an essential component to this.  Using the analogy of building a house, a dentist and periodontist lay a good foundation.  From there, the orthodontist "frames the house" by putting whatever teeth you have in the best position.  From there, the dentist acts as an "interior designer," by picking the colors, the finish and any other restorations needed to give the best possible outcome.  Dr. El-Hillal says that orthodontists play a pivotal role because without that solid framework, patients really can't get that occlusion they're looking for.

Dr. El-Hillal says that in the past 15 years, there has been a paradigm shift in orthodontics, one that's been part of his treatment philosophy at E & S Orthodontics.  Face-driven orthodontics is when he looks at a person's face when making diagnostic decisions.  For a large number of his patients, he treats them with non-extraction therapy, which is a big topic of debate.  He says that when he's looked at facial outcomes of whose had non-extraction treatment, he has found that there are certain deficiencies that occur that he can try to avoid.  There are technological advances that allow him to achieve results without extraction and because of that, Dr. El-Hillal thinks he can give his patients a better treatment outcome and able to give them a higher, superior facial result.

By treating a child between the ages of 10-14, while they're still growing, it allows them to void all of those unnecessary things and expenses as an adult.  Dr. El-Hillal says that patients should do what's best for them in the long run, whether that's seeing a dentist who also does orthodontics or an orthodontist who has an additional 2-3 years of dental education.
