Sleep Apnea Prevalence Among Commercial Drivers, With Dr. Rich Gillespie, Vancouver, Washington

Driving while feeling sleepy is a dangerous combination and it's becoming more of an issue with cross-country drivers, especially truck drivers, who tend to put on weight and this can contribute to a sleep apnea situation, according to Dr. Rich Gillespie, a dentist in Vancouver, Washington with Gillespie Dentistry.  We're finding that being sleepy and drowsy because of poor sleep is as much a factor in the accidents on the highway as drinking or drugs, he says.

Dr. Rich GillespieDr. Gillespie has seen some regulatory action take place, requiring truck drivers to have a sleep test and then be treated and monitored.  Devices that are made today can be monitored to be sure they're being used.  This can be applied to pilots, truck drivers and air traffic controllers.  An oral appliance is an especially easy treatment option for those who travel because of its portability, compared to that of a CPAP device.
