Patients receiving dental care have a few options when it comes to sedation, depending on their anxiety level, says Dr. Stephen Poss, of Poss Dental Designs, in Brentwood, Tennessee.
Patients can do simple nitrous oxide, that they breath in to relax. Oral sedation is where the patient takes pills before they come in and the patient will drift in and out of sleep during the procedure. There is also complete IV sedation, where the patient is completely asleep during the procedure. Dr. Poss says that when patients choose oral or IV sedation, a driver must drive the patient home, whereas nitrous oxide disappears as soon as the patient is off it, so the patient can drive themselves home.
