Veneers, With Dr. Stephen Poss, Dentist, Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, Tennessee

There are a variety of reasons for cosmetic dentistry but Dr. Stephen Poss finds that the biggest one is self-esteem.  Cosmetic dentistry gives people confidence, he says.

In his office in Brentwood Tennessee, Dr. Poss lays out an architectural plan, where he talks with the patient about their smile, as well as shape and color.  He then puts temporary veneers on after the contouring is done, so they can go home and inspect this temporary version, in case they want to make any changes.  At the final visit, he places the veneers on with a preview gel to make sure it's exactly what the patient wants.  "There are no surprises, as the patient is in control with the way they want their smile to look," Dr. Poss says.

There are many patients in his practice that have had veneers for over 20 years and his practice offers a limited lifetime warranty on all of their work.

Cosmetic Restoration Choices, With Dr. Stephen Poss, Dentist, Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, Tennessee

Technology has changed so much in the past few years for those considering cosmetic restoration, says Dr. Stephen Poss, a dentist in Brentwood, Tennessee.  Veneers, he says, can change a smile almost instantaneously.  The six month smile, which are tooth-colored braces, worn mainly for cosmetic reasons, can straighten a smile very quickly, along with Invisalign.

There is lots of technology out there to give patients a beautiful smile and many different formats, depending upon what the patient is looking for, Dr. Poss says.  Dr. Poss suggests getting a consultation first.  At his office, he offers a complimentary consultation to evaluate what the best need is for the patient based on their expectations.

Oral Appliances to Treat Sleep Apnea, With Dr. Stephen Poss, Dentist, Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, Tennessee

The gold standard of treatment for sleep apnea is the CPAP device, if it can be tolerated, says Dr. Stephen Poss, a dentist with Practical Sleep Solutions in Brentwood, Tennessee.  As 40% of Americans cannot tolerate a CPAP device, the alternative is an oral appliance.

Dentists will follow through to make sure the apnea events are gone with their patients.  Dr. Poss says there's even technology to have a chip implanted in an oral appliance of someone who works in the transportation industry to verify their usage with the appliance when they travel or fly.

While the CPAP blows the airway open, the oral appliance positions the jaw in a vertical position to open the airway naturally so that when the patient is lying down, the airway doesn't collapse, Dr. Poss says.  The oral appliance can also be adjusted throughout treatment.  Dr. Poss also says that most insurance carriers will pay a portion of the treatment with an oral appliance.

Treatment of Sleep Apnea, With Dr. Stephen Poss, Dentist, Franklin, Nashville, Brentwood, Tennessee

There's a "myriad" of things that can happen if sleep apnea goes untreated, a lot of which is very detrimental or life-threatening, says Dr. Stephen Poss, a dentist in Brentwood, Tennessee with Practical Sleep Solutions.  Untreated sleep apnea can cause high blood pressure, cardiac events such as stroke, diabetes, GERD, metabolic changes and weight gain.

The gold standard of treatment is a CPAP device, which can very well control sleep apnea, as it can be monitored very easily.  However, Dr. Poss says 40% of patients can't tolerated the mask with hoses and so for them, alternatives need to explored.  One of those alternatives is an oral appliance, from which they can get relief, especially for those with mild to moderate sleep apnea.

While getting the oral appliance only takes a few weeks, those with sleep apnea will be dealing with it for the rest of their lives and treated accordingly.
