Pediatric Sleep Disorders, Featuring Dr. Steve Lawson of the TMJ & Dental Sleep Centre Winnipeg Canada

Pediatric sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, are often mis-diagnosed and under-diagnosed because we assume only adults have obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, says Dr. Steve Lawson of the TMJ & Dental Sleep Centre of Winnipeg.  Dr. Lawson says that the numbers are "astounding" for children.

According to Dr. Lawson, at younger ages, there is an opportunity to diagnose and treat more definitively.  There are non-surgical options for children, such as the expansion of arches the open the airways and children as young as 4 or 5 can be treated.

Dr. Lawson says that research shows a significant correlation between obstructive sleep apnea and ADHD.  He says that he can turn kids from snorers and kids with very compromised situations into kids with the potential to breath.  The treatment can be "life changing," Dr. Lawson says.
