Profile of a Sleep Dentist, Dentist Dr. Erika Mason, Richmond, Virginia

Dr. Erika Mason of Sleep Better Virginia became a dentist because of her early experiences working as a candy striper in a hospital one summer. It persuaded her that she wanted to make people feel better. After a job with a dentist, she realized that dentistry was the career field for her.

Dr. Mason has seen many changes since she first entered the practice of dentistry. A paper and pencil world has switched to computers. X-rays can now be taken with a small sensor in a patient’s mouth. Also, dentistry has become less invasive and uncomfortable.

Problems with her hands led Dr. Mason from the practice of general dentistry to sleep dentistry as a full-time practice area. She finds it more fulfilling than her previous work. “When I do sleep dentistry, treating people with obstructive sleep apnea, it’s life changing.” People with sleep apnea often suffered from a range of life problems, including losing their jobs, not showing up for work because they were too tired. Some people have memory loss. Partners move to other bedrooms. “Each patient has a story.” The fulfillment is in “changing their lives, actually saving their lives.”

Dr. Mason says that treatment with an oral appliance can add ten years to a patient’s life. Sleep apnea sufferers who do not get either CPAP treatment or a dental appliance are facing higher risk of death. Dr. Mason feels rewarded that she has been able to make a difference for so many people.

For over 25 years, Erika Mason, D.D.S. of Sleep Better Virginia has built a highly successful dental practice, renowned for its innovative services, focused on the care and comfort of patients. Along with general dentistry, she offers a wide variety of progressive dental techniques; including treatment of sleep apnea and treatment of migraine headaches all with the aid of the most advanced technology in order to help her patients feel better, sleep better, and look better. She spoke with Sleep Better TV, providing online sleep breathing disorder video news content. Sleep Better TV is a featured network of Sequence Media Group.
